Many homeowners and business owners don’t discover that their roof has a leak until a hard rain starts to fall, and we all know that Iowa gets a fair share of rain every year.
Many things can cause roof leaks. Some of these things are due to the wear and tear of Iowa weather on an ageing roof such as vents, flashing, shingle damage, rotting decking, ice damming. And sometimes (we hate it when this happens to customers), even if you have a newer roof, it can be caused by poor quality and improper installation.
When water is coming from the ceiling in your home or business in the Des Moines area, there are a couple immediate solutions to prevent further damage:
- Where the leak is dripping water, place a bucket or pan to catch the water.
- Sometimes if the leak is serious, you can choose to poke a SMALL hole in the ceiling to prevent collapse of the sheet rock or tile; this allows drainage into the bucket. Use safety measures when performing this task with protective gear and help with your ladder. As a note of disclaimer: This will be a hole in your ceiling, Roof Iowa is not liable for any advice, decisions, or activities of self-performed work on your home.

Most of the time you wouldn’t even know you have a roof leak until you begin to notice related symptoms like mold on your ceiling or that very specific but almost indescribably smell from the mold and mildew in the sheet rock. Once the water has made its way to your ceiling and developed mold or mildew your roof is in trouble! You can clean the mold or patch the roof but both are likely to be band aids!
I woke up this morning and found out that my roof was leaking and water was coming through my ceiling. I have already placed a bucket where the water was coming down from so that it can catch it. Right now, I am waiting for my husband to come home from work so that he can see if he can fix it. However, I might also just call a roofing expert to do the work for us if it looks like it will be too big of a job for him. Yet, will a roofer still be able to fix a roof if the roof is not dry and there is snow on it?
